Nov. 4, 1923 - July 28, 1994 - Mrs. Jewell Bennett Flowers, 70 of Hollow Rock, died Thursday, July 28, 1994 at Baptist Memorial Hospital in Huntingdon. Funeral services were conducted on Sunday, July 31, 1994 at the Faith Baptist Church. Interment followed in the New Prospect Cemetery with Reverends Jimmy Allison and Steve Davis officiating.

Mrs. Flowers, the daughter of the late Loyd Jackson and Era Bell Rowland Bennett, was born November 4, 1923, in Carroll County. She was a retired employee of Henry I. Siegel, and a member of the Faith Baptist Church. She is survived by her husband, Maurice (Radio) Flowers, two sisters, Gladys Lowe and Thelma Davis all of Hollow Rock. Pallbearers who served were Leonard Lowe, Gaylon Lowe, Gerald Patterson, Billy (Cotton) King, J.D. Burns, and Bill Rice.

Frances Olive Blackwell Spence

Frances Olive Blackwell Spence, 82, of Manchester and formerly of Camden died Friday, Jan. 27, 2006, at Harton Regional in Tullahoma.

Funeral services will be Sunday at 2 p.m. at Stockdale-Malin Chapel in Camden with Brother Leonard Greer officiating. Burial will be in Camden City Cemetery.

A native of Carroll County, Tenn., Mrs. Spence was a retired secretary for the state of Tennessee and a Baptist.

She was preceded in death by her parents Patrick Daniel and Clara Williams Blackwell and her husband, Delbert Thomas Spence, who died in 1974.

Survivors include daughter Nola Dean Spence of Murfreesboro; sons James (Sue) Spence and William (Johnnie) Spence, both of Manchester, Barry Spence of Smyrna and Phillip (Georgia) Spence of Pegram; brother Bobby (Jeanine) Blackwell of Warren, Pa.; 10 grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.

Visitation will be today from 2 to 7 p.m. at Stockdale-Malin Funeral Home in Camden. 731-584-8282

November 11, 1923 - January 6, 1972

Clarence Walton Butler, 48, mail carrier with the U.S. Post Office Department at Jackson, Tennessee, died January 6 at St. Thomas Hospital in Nashville. He Was a member of the Baptist Church and a World War II Army veteran, having served in the Philippines from 1944 to 1946. He was a member of the National Association of Letter Carriers.

Funeral services were at Dilday Funeral Home Chapel at 1:00 p.m. January 8 with the Rev. Ralph Matlock of Nashville officiating. Burial was in Marlboro Cemetery Near Vale with Dilday Funeral Home in charge of arrangements. Pallbearers were E. L. Shelton, Bob Allen, Leon Harris, Leahman Harris, Joe Tignor, and William Vanden Bosch.

Surviving are his wife, Mrs. Inez Wilson Butler of Beech Bluff, Tenn. His Parents were C. E. and Lou Bell Elkins Butler.

HUNTINGDON, Tenn. (AP) - The family of Pvt. William Bernice Clark never had a funeral for him, never got to say goodbye and never really accepted his fate among the fallen during the Normandy D-Day landings in World War II. That was until his dog tag was discovered in the sands of Omaha Beach.
On Wednesday—exactly 63 years after that tragic day—the aged tag was returned to his native Tennessee.

Services for Louise Cole Smothers, 80 of Camden, were held at 11 a.m. Friday, October 15, at Mt. Nebo Baptist Church in Buena Vista with Bro. Paul Merwin officiating. Burial followed in the McCauley Cemetery. Oakdale Funeral Home was in charge of the arrangements. Mrs. Smothers died Monday, October 11, at Life Care Center in Bruceton.

She was born on December 29, 1923, in Buena Vista to the late Clifford and Ruth Dickerson Cole. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Leon Smothers. She is survived by two sons, Phillip Smothers of Camden and Roger (Kerrie Doyle) Smothers of Binghamton, New York; two sisters, Ada Ruth Kelly of Nashville and Blanche Birdwell of Buena Vista; a brother, Willard Cole of Ft. Worth, Texas; and three grandchildren, Evan, Cole and Noah Smothers of Binghamton, New York.

Services for Rowe Butler Cox were at 10 a.m. Tuesday, October 12. at Bruceton Funeral Home. Bro. Allen K. Weakland officiated the services. Burial followed in the Prospect Cemetery. Pallbearers who served were Eldridge Walker, Bill Eubanks, Donald Higdon, Joshua Higdon, Jamie Hudson and Brett Blankenship. Honorary pallbearers were Wheatly Faust, Elree Horton, Esco Alexander, Tip Lowe, Lloyd Larkins, Nig Allen and Louis Smith., Mr. Cox died Monday, October 11, at his home.

He was born December 22, 1922, to Russell Butler and Pearl Susan Rowe Cox. He was a member of the Bruceton Church of Christ, a Veteran of-World War II, serving with the 180 Infantry Division 45 Regular. He retired from DuPoni in New Johnsonville.

Mr. Cox is survived by his wife, Viola Hampton Cox; two daughters, Vickie Cox and Dawn Higdon and her husband, Donald Higdon, all of Bruceton; four grandchildren, Jamie Hudson, Chaisee Blankenship and her husband, Brett, Joshua Higdon and Whitney Higdon, all of Bruceton; three great-grandchildren, Brittany and Melisha Hudson, and Hope Blankenship. He was preceded in death by a great-grandchild, Madison Dawn Blankenship.

Services for William Voris (Billy) Fry of Baltimore, Maryland were Tuesday, June 28, at 3:00 in the Chapel of the Bruceton Funeral Home. Rev. Noel Edwards officiated. Burial was in the New Hope Cemetery, Yuma, Tennessee. Bruceton Funeral Home in charge.

A native of Carroll County, Mr. Fry, 47, died in Crownsville State Hospital, Crownsville, Maryland, Friday, June 25 of a heart attack. The son of the late M. V. Fry, Sr., and Iota Robinson Fry of Bruceton who survives, he was a Veteran of World War II.

Other survivors are his wife, Mrs. Alverda Fry, Baltimore, Maryland, two sons, William M. Fry, Ft. Knox, Kentucky and Brian P. Fry, Calhoun, Kentucky. One sister, Mrs. Janice Wray of Bruceton, also survives.

Mrs. Wilson was born April 22, 1924 in Carroll County to the late Samuel Barney Hester and Nancy Elvira (Groom) Hester. She was a retired beautician for Wyatt's Beauty Shop and a member of the United Methodist Church of Hollow Rock. Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Claude Wilson.
Survivors include: one son, Sammy Wilson of Ohio; and two sisters, Doris Pace of Alton, Illinois and Joyce Travis of Michigan.

Burial was in the Prospect Cemetery in Hollow Rock. Mrs. Wade, a housewife, died on Thursday, May 22 at Jackson-Madison County General Hospital. She was a member of the Hollow Rock United Methodist Church.

She was born on October 1, 1924 in Hollow Rock to the late Grover Cleveland Hudson and Era Beatrice Hatley Hudson. She was also preceded in death by a grandson, Jeffery McGee.

Argie Jean Lancaster-Hurt

Argie Jean Lancaster-Hurt, 81, of Bruceton, died Tuesday, December 12, 2006 at Life Care Center of Bruceton. Graveside services were held at 10 a.m. Friday, December 15, at Prospect Cemetery in Hollow Rock. Bruceton Funeral Home was in charge of the arrangements.

Mrs. Hurt, daughter of the late Lennie and Emmett Nelson, was born on January 29, 1925, in Dickson. She grew up in Bruceton with her two sisters, Marie and Virginia Lee. Although she struggled with Parkinson’s Disease for over her last 10 years, she never complained or lost her sweet, lovely attitude toward all around her and toward life. Argie’s life was filled with music. Encouraged by her mother, she studied piano and sang. With her sister, Virginia Lee, and her friend, Juanita Fristoe, they formed a trio that sang locally and on Nashville radio in the 1930s. Although she had no children of her own, she touched the lives of many children in Bruceton through music. She gave piano lessons in the music studio her husband, Harry Lancaster, built for her behind their house on Carroll Street. Argie was also the organist at First Baptist Church in Bruceton for many years.

Harry died in May of 1993, and she married Lewis Hurt in October of 1994, who passed away on June 12 of this year. Argie is survived by her sister, Virginia N. Ackerman of Huntsville, Alabama; four nephews, Gary N. Ackerman and his wife, Robin Dearling, of Seattle, Washington, and their sons, Graham and David, Steven Ackerman and his wife, Emma Ackerman, of Huntsville, Alabama, and their son, Garrett, and daughters, Maghan and Hallie, Tony Lancaster and his wife, Edith, their son, Will, and daughter, Gretchen, and James Parham of Atlanta, Georgia; a niece, Leigh Gresham of Dallas, Texas; two stepsons, Ted and Richard Hurt; and her stepdaughter, Linda Smothers of Huntingdon, who was a great comfort to her after she moved to Life Care Center. Mrs. Hendrix was born on February 3, 1924, in Buena Vista, to the late Benjamin Harrison Pickler and Eva Myrtle Williams Pickler. She was a former payroll clerk for Henry I. Siegel. She was a member of Bruceton First Baptist Church. She was preceded in death by her husband, Mr. Martin Hendrix; a sister, Lucy Lee Park; and four brothers, Clyde Pickler, Jessie Pickler, B.H. A former Carroll Countian, Ruben Junior Pinson, died in Tallmadge, Ohio, on December 15, 2007.

He was born in Hollow Rock on June 15, 1924, to the late Rufus and Bernice Presson Pinson. He graduated from Central High School in Bruceton in 1942. Ruben served in the U.S. Army during World War II. He retired from GenCorp in Ohio in 1986 after 29 years of service. He was a member of the Masonic Lodge #0517.

He is survived by two sons, Timothy and Riley Pinson; three grandchildren; two step-grandchildren; four great-grandchildren, all of Ohio; two brothers, Johnny Pinson of Hollow Rock and Tony Pinson of Bruceton; and two sisters, Rosalyn Scott of Jackson and Jackie McGowan of Camden. Rev. Howard Frank Grether, II officiated a private family ceremony. Following cremation, inurnment was at the Ohio Western Reserve National Cemetery. Mr. Robinson, the son of the late Clarence and Ruby (Russell) Robinson, was born January 22, 1925, in Carroll County. He was a retired railroad worker of 42 years for L&N Railroad Company and was a member of the Huntingdon First Baptist Church.

He was preceded in death by a brother, Wade Robinson. He is survived by his wife of 49 years, Ruth Robinson; a daughter, Patricia Latham of Jackson; a son Gary Robinson of New Johnsonville; two grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

Services for James Ray Shawl, 70 of Bruceton, were at 1 p.m. Thursday, October 22, at Bruceton Funeral Home. Burial was in Hollow Rock's Prospect Cemetery. Mr. Shawl, a yardmaster for the old Louisville and Nashville Railroad (now Seaboard Systems), died Monday, October 19, at Nashville Memorial Hospital in Madison.

He was married to Nancy Helen Owens Shawl. They had four children, Mary Felts of Joelton, Susan Blair of Carthage, Gail Foster of Alexandria, Virginia, and Sandra Nichols of Jacksonville, Florida. Mrs. Lewis was born on April 30, 1924, in Bruceton, to the late Joseph Hyman Webb and Ora Lee Nanney Webb. She was a member of Camden First Baptist Church and an operator for Bruceton Telephone Company.

She was preceded in death by her brother, Mr. Joseph (Buddy) Webb; and a niece, Mrs. Mary Ann Webb Edwards.

She is survived by a brother and sister-in-law, Mr. Billy Gene (Carolyn) Webb of New Johnsonville; a stepdaughter, Mrs. Rena Lewis Jones of Maryville; a stepson, Mr. Ronnie Lewis of Jackson; a niece, Mrs. Diane Bailey of Nashville; and two nephews, Mr. Mark Webb of New Johnsonville and Mr. Gary Webb of Nashville.

BRUCETON: Inez Butler Williams, 86, died Thursday, December 16, 2010 at Life Care Center in Bruceton. Funeral services were Friday, December 17, at 2 p.m. at Dilday-Carter Funeral Home with Bro. Jack Hopper officiating. Burial followed in Marlboro Cemetery.

Mrs. Williams was born July 30, 1924 in Hollow Rock to the late Milford and Flora (Presson) Wilson. She was a homemaker. Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Clarence Butler; two brothers, Doye Wilson and Carl Wilson.

Survivors include: one brother, Gene (Pat) Wilson of Bruceton; five nephews, three nieces and several great-nieces and nephews.

Ms. Woodard, a retired bookkeeper for the Bank of Huntingdon, died Monday, October 8 at Baptist Memorial Hospital in Huntingdon of heart disease. She was born October 23, 1923 near Buena Vista to the late John D. and Minnie Wyatt Woodard. She was a member of Prospect Baptist Church. She was also preceded in death by a sister, Margaret Blount. She is survived by several cousins.
